FOURTEEN

“So that was interesting,” Megan said as we walked back to the motel.

“Very,” I agreed.

“I was kind of wondering if something like that was going to happen. Just the way she looked when she talked about Delilah. I wonder how long they’ve been into each other. Or if anything ever happened before now.”

“Delilah said nothing had but...maybe she was just protecting Lindsay’s privacy,” I replied. “Maybe something happened and then Lindsay made Delilah promise to never talk about it, or just seemed awkward about it.”

“Maybe. Boy, this gets us one step closer to sex with both of them,” Megan murmured. “Although...tell me something. I know Delilah’s all like ‘my legs will always be open for you’, but if it really came down to it, would you make her choose?”

“Of course not,” I replied. “I like Delilah a lot, but we’re not a couple, and I don’t know if I’ll even stick around for a long time.”

“That’s good to hear. Plus...you’ve still got me and Elizabeth to fuck you.”

“That does help.”

We got back to the motel and stepped inside. While I went about the process of checking the fire, which was almost out, getting it restarted so that it would smolder and keep the pace warm while we were out, then started to get things ready for the cat, Megan asked me something that I wasn’t entirely prepared for.

“So what’s our actual relationship?”

“What do you think it is?” I replied.

She laughed. “That’s evasive.”

“More just...I’ve been through a lot today,” I replied. “And I don’t want a fight.”

“I’m not looking for a fight,” she said, kind of sharply. I glanced at her. She sighed. “Sorry. That’s...no, that’s fair. I know we had not the best start to our...friendship. But I guess...I mean, this is basically dating, right? We share meals together, travel together, share our feelings, sleep together, literally and figuratively. I mean, that’s dating. Right?”

“Seems so to me,” I replied as I wiped down the inside of the toilet tank lid.

“So we’re dating? You agree?”

“Yeah. I would say that by that logic I am also dating, to varying degrees, two other women, with perhaps a third on the way,” I replied.

“That’s true.” She fell silent.

“Got something specific on your mind?”

“How would you feel about it if I saw another dude?”

I glanced at her, then went back to my job, now pouring the loose soil into the makeshift catbox. “To put it bluntly: I don’t want you to see other men romantically or sexually. If you do, we’ll have to end our relationship. I realize that I am being completely unfair and hypocritical, and I do apologize for it, and if that leads to your breaking up with me, then I will accept that without any hard feelings...how does that work?” I asked.

“Well, it’s sure honest,” she replied. “I appreciate that. And…” She was silent for a few seconds, then she sighed. “Damn if I don’t care.”

“About what, exactly?”

“That you’re a hypocrite. You’re fucking other women on the side pretty regularly but we’d break up if I fucked another dude.
